Friday, May 18, 2007 at 10:52PM Social bookmarketing sites store, classify, share, and search links through what is called folksonomy that is being done on the Internet or even on a local intranet. These sites don’t just cater to web page bookmarks. They specialize in a specific subject or format like feeds, books, videos, music, shopping items, map locations, and more. An example of a social bookmarking site would be Reddit.
Reedit is a community website where users are able to post links to content on the web. It doesn’t matter the links as long as the links point to a website. Then others look at the site and vote whether the link should go up or down the page. You can check the site by going to
http://www.reddit.com.Although social bookmarking is just taking off on the Internet recently, the concept of sharing online bookmarks dates back to April 1996 with the site itList.com. After this people wanted to have a piece of the pie, so what other people did was create companies like Backflip, Blink, Clip2, Hotlinks, and Quiver, to name a few. Unfortunately, this group of Netrepreneurs did not last long and folded when the dot com area went bust.
Social bookmarking has caught on so well, that it inspired the social news movement. This movement was responsible for the creation of sites like del.icio.us, reddit, Digg, and the new Netscape portal.
Social bookmarketing is successful online because of the way it works. Basically, users store lists of Internet resources that are useful. Other people in the same niche as the person posting the site view the lists. The lists are usually in a category, are tagged, or may even appear randomly.
In most cases, these lists are categorized under keywords, but don’t be surprised if you find any that are tagged and ranked by the number of users which have bookmarked them. Because of competition, many of the social bookmarking sites now offer functions and services to visitors including rating, commenting, ability to import and export, add notes, give reviews, email links, provide automatic notification, feed subscription, and more.
Social bookmarking has its pros and cons. The good part about it is you can use it as a tool for getting search engines to rank your site higher in search results, by them recognizing incoming links. On the downside to this is that links can get corrupted. This happens when unmentionable people abuse the system for their own greedy gain, and decide to spam the system by bookmarking a site several times using a lot of popular tags. Because of this the webmaster has to use security systems to track this and stop the abusers.
Social bookmarking has its place in website promotion, if you use it properly. If you don’t use it right, you pay the consequences.
